HOUMA, LA — The Tri-Parish showed out Saturday night.
In front of a packed crowd at the Houma Terrebonne Civic Center, CWC 37 delivered exactly what fans came for — action, grit, and statement-making finishes.
In the main event of the evening, Houma native Joe Borkowski (1-0) scored a first-round TKO victory over Nick Gay of Houston, Texas, capping off a back-and-forth battle with a beautiful spinning elbow that shifted momentum for good.
The two fighters spent much of the round jockeying for cage control, exchanging position and pressure. But once Borkowski created space and poured on a flurry of hammer fists, the referee waved it off late in the first round — despite Gay appearing to remain alert in the closing sequence.
It was a controversial, but emphatic finish that left the crowd cheering for their hometown fighter.
In the co-main event, Angelica Gutierrez Guzman overcame a rocky start to stop Briana “Too Cold” Roper in the second round.
Roper came out fast, using sharp boxing and footwork to put Guzman on the defensive through the first four minutes. But in the final minute of round one, Guzman turned the tide with superior grappling — taking the fight to the mat and keeping it there.
Round two was all Guzman, as she dominated position and landed unanswered ground-and-pound until the referee stepped in to stop it.
To her credit, Roper’s early work nearly earned her the round and showcased high-level striking. But once the fight hit the canvas, Guzman left no doubt who the better grappler was.
Earlier in the evening, the undercard brought plenty of fireworks, with a series of amateur bouts showcasing MMA talent from across the region. Fighters from multiple disciplines — from BJJ specialists to brawling strikers — brought their best in front of an energetic and vocal crowd.
CWC 37 once again proved why it’s a southern Louisiana can’t-miss event
