The 2025 NBA Draft was absolute crap, the only thing that saved it was the moms being showcased.
On a night when the New Orleans Pelicans were supposed to take a meaningful step toward relevance, they instead took a hard pivot into chaos.
In what’s being widely criticized as a franchise-altering blunder, the Pelicans traded the No. 23 pick andan unprotected 2026 first-rounder to the Atlanta Hawks to move up to No. 13 and draft Maryland big man Derik Queen.
While Queen is a respectable prospect—averaging 16.5 points and 9 rebounds last season—he’s not seen as a generational talent. Meanwhile, New Orleans is coming off a 21-win season and just traded Brandon Ingram to Toronto. In other words, they’re likely to be bad again next year—and that 2026 pick could turn into a golden ticket.
National pundits didn’t hold back. Longtime NBA analyst Bill Simmons torched the move, calling it “one of the five dumbest trades of this decade” and adding that he was “speechless” at the lack of foresight.
But while the Pelicans front office was busy making headlines for all the wrong reasons, three remarkable women stole the show during the NBA Draft broadcast—and reminded everyone why this event is about more than just trades and stats.
Chari Nordgaard Knueppel, mother of Charlotte’s No. 4 pick Kon Knueppel, carried herself with the poise of a veteran and the pride of a champion. A former standout player herself, Chari’s calm joy in the moment was a testament to the years of sacrifice behind the scenes.
Ashley Elsey McNeeley, mom of UConn star Liam McNeeley (selected No. 29 by the Hornets), became an instant fan favorite after an emotional on-stage embrace with her son. The heartfelt moment captured what the cameras so rarely show—pure family triumph.
And then there was Maria Harper, the viral sensation of the night. Mother of No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper (San Antonio), Maria stole the spotlight in every way possible—exuding charisma, class, and style. A former college player at the University of New Orleans, she coached Dylan throughout his childhood and now proudly watched him become an NBA star. “It was surreal,” Dylan said afterward, smiling through tears.
From Picks to Parents: A Tale of Two Drafts
In a way, this year’s draft had two very different storylines.
The Pelicans’ draft strategy: Reckless, short-sighted, and dangerously optimistic.
The moms’ draft night moments: Emotional, powerful, and unforgettable.
Where New Orleans fumbled a chance to build for the future, the moms reminded us what this night is really about—dedication, resilience, and the long road to success.
